The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, announced on Thursday that members of the House have collectively contributed approximately N704.9 million from their salaries over the past five months. This initiative was launched to alleviate the hardships faced by vulnerable Nigerians, particularly in light of economic challenges following the removal of fuel subsidies.
The decision was based on a resolution passed during plenary, where lawmakers agreed to donate half of their salaries as a gesture of solidarity with the suffering masses. Speaking during the resumption of plenary, Speaker Abbas highlighted the progress of the initiative and how these funds will be utilized to provide meaningful relief to those in need.
He stated:
"If you recall, about five months ago, we decided to contribute half of our salaries to address the critical needs of the Nigerian people. I am happy to inform you that so far, we have contributed N704, 907,578.82."
The Speaker further revealed that the accumulated funds would be officially handed over to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by the end of December. This transfer will ensure that the money is used exclusively to assist Nigerians who are most in need.
On December 31, Speaker Abbas will lead a delegation to present the funds to the President, underscoring the lawmakers' commitment to mitigating the economic struggles faced by citizens.
